Incumbent serves as a Supervisory Dietitian and in this capacity assiststhe Chief, Nutrition & Food Service (NFS) in planning, directing andcoordinating comprehensive Medical Nutrition Therapy services and NutritionCare Process and PACT at the Roseburg VA Healthcare System.  Clinical activities encompass NutritionSupport, Education, Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry Substance Abuse TreatmentProgram, Hospice, Extended Care Unit, HBPC, and Ambulatory Primary Care andPACT clinics.  Operational responsibilityincludes oversight responsibility for community-based outpatient clinics(CBOCs).

Assists the NFS Chief in administrative duties for food production, foodservice, and budget management. 

Directly supervises the clinical dietitians.

Provides back up to the Chief, NFS during periods of absence.  Represents the VAMC on variety of clinicalcommittees.  Acts as liaison between theclinical staff and the Food Production & Service Programs.  Also advances clinical practice throughefficient and effective medical nutrition therapy, Nutrition Care Process, PACTand Shared Medical Group Appointments and education to improve patient qualityof life, minimize therapeutic risk, and enhance clinical outcomes.

Additional duties of this position:

Supervises, develops, and implements MedicalNutritional Therapy Program/Nutrition Care Process that includes the following:

· Nutritional care criteria for the assessment ofpatients’ nutritional needs and status.

· The initiation of care plans with appropriatetreatment modalities

· Sustained nutrition and supportive care for thosewith no current nutritional problems

· Implementation of physician orders through serviceof meals, or through enteral or parenteral nutrition

· Development of dietary regimens for inpatients andoutpatients

· Participation in clinical interdisciplinary roundsand patient treatment / discharge planning conference.

· Plans, implements, coordinates, and providesguidance to clinical staff on an ongoing educational program that includes Interviewingand counseling patients individually and in groups, with family members,caretakers, and residential care home sponsors on nutrition and specific dietsthat are adapted and suitable for the home situation with consideration forsocioeconomic and religious background.

· Develops goals and objectives for clinical programsand reports on accomplishments at the designated staff meeting.

· Serves as a consultant to physicians, other medicalpersonnel, fellow allied health professionals and nutrition staff concerningcomplex clinical nutrition issues or proposed nutrition research projects;gives guidance and recommendations on the practicality of implementingsuggestions.

· Recommends visual patient education supportmaterials as well as other clinical resources needs within budgetaryconstraints.

· Coordinates and directs the development of requiredwritten discharge diets and other needed supportive educational guides andmaterials issued patients to assist them in dietary compliance upon dischargeand thereby minimizing the necessity for rapid re-admission to hospital forinability to cope with dietary regime.

· Maintains professional relationships in the fieldof nutrition and participates in related professional activities.

· Plans and coordinates the analyses of the modifieddiet menus using the regular menu as a guide and staying within the budgetaryallowance and the Recommended Dietary Intake.

· Assures that hospital diet manual reflects currentconcepts in nutritional treatment of disease, is reviewed / revisedperiodically, and is available to medical personnel.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

1.  COVERAGE. Following are requirements for appointment as a dietitian in theVeterans Health Administration (VHA). These requirements apply to all VHA dietitians in the GS-630 series.

2.  BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is notpossible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, sectionA, paragraph 3g, this part.)

  b.  Education.  The individual musthave earned a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. regionally accreditedcollege or university, and fulfilled each of the following criteria:

  (1)  Completed a didactic program in dieteticsaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).

  (2)  Completed a CADE accredited supervisedpractice program.

  (3)  Passed a national examination administered bythe Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing branch of theAmerican Dietetic Association (ADA).

  c.  Registration

  (1)  All applicants must be registered with theCDR.

  (2)  Non-registeredapplicants who otherwise meet the minimum requirements in the basicqualification standard may be appointed as a graduate dietitian under theauthority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D).  Failure to obtain CDR registration duringthat period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment.

  (3)  Lossof Credential.  An employee in thisoccupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/

registration within the required timeframe, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification

registration must be removed from theoccupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
