Position is located within the Projects & Operations Section (Energy Center), Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (PVAMC) in Portland, Oregon.  Some of duties include:

  • Installing, repairing, overhauling and assembling/disassembling refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
  • Troubleshooting and repairing complicated electronic control circuits;
  • Monitoring computerized controls;
  • Using a variety of gauges and meters to conduct tests, calibrate controls and make adjustments;
  • Using and maintaining a variety to tools/equipment in the installation, overhaul and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
  • Making visual, audible and mechanical checks for proper temperature/oil levels, unusual noises, overheated bearing loose connections, faulty insulation, frayed or loose belts/gaskets, etc.;
  • Repairing systems using refrigeration cycles, complicated electronic control circuits, low and high pressure cooling units and air operated pneumatic valves;
  • Reading and interpreting instructions, specifications, blueprints, work order, etc;
  • Independently  completing all assigned work orders;
  • Using established safe work/practices/procedures to perform work;
  • Keeping records of time and material used;
  • Performing other duties as necessary.

 

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:30 am to 4:00pm , Exact tour TBD

QUALIFICATIONS:  For this position, the job element method is used to match what you( the applicant) can do against the duties of the job.  Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (job elements) required of the job.  Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration.  Your background must demonstrate experience in performing work as in Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic and other HVAC work. You will be rated on the following job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

 

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:  Your qualifications will be first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.  Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.  The potential eligible are then rated against the remainder of the questions.  The screen-out for this position is Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

 

JOB ELEMENTS:  Those who meet minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

 

(SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT) - Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

 

  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repairs, etc.

  • Technical practices in maintaining refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, blueprints, and work orders.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent daily duties consist of climbing, working in cramped positions and restricted places, and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment in the repair and installation of A/C and refrigeration systems.  Rigging devices, come-a-longs, hoists and pulleys are used in the removal of large compressors, coils, motors, air handlers and condensers. Incumbent in making repairs and installation, works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms.  Incumbent in making repairs and installation works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms.  Equipment is located in hard-to-reach places and frequently stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling for long periods is required when making repairs.

 

Working Conditions: Required to work outside, under and on top of tall buildings, in cramped areas with low overheads and in areas with moving equipment and machinery; is exposed to electrical hazards, hot and cold areas, and contagious diseases; required to occasionally wear uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing; subject to exposure to refrigerate, acid oils, and other safety hazards during accomplishment of assigned duties.  Often required to crawl under buildings where extreme exposure to fiberglass and asbestos is not uncommon.
